How to take a forehead temperature
- Let it settle. Keep the thermometer in the same room as the person for a few minutes first.
- Clear the forehead. Move hair away and wipe off sweat. Wait if the person has just come in from the cold or been exercising.
- Point and press. Hold it at the distance shown in the instructions, aimed at the centre of the forehead, and press the button.
- Read and record. If you are unsure, wait a minute and take a second reading.
A thermometer measures temperature; it does not diagnose illness. If you are worried about a high temperature, especially in a baby under 3 months, contact NHS 111 or your GP. In an emergency, call 999. Readings can vary slightly; always follow the instructions in the box.
